Smart Cities are a new way of developing infrastructure and basic services (e.g. water, energy) in Gauteng Province and South Africa. Altogether, about. 50-60 Smart City/Mega City development projects have been identified in Gauteng in various stages, non-residential as well residential projects. These present unique opportunities for large groups of companies, consortiums, bridge and impact funders, investors, and corporations to participate in socio-economic activities on many levels. Also, these enable Social Corporate Responsibility engagements, economic developments, job creation, a runway for new products and technologies, and new business models.

Furthermore, by creating new settlements from scratch, one is able to create new efficiencies and include the latest innovations as well as social and economic structures that would enable empowerment and growth amongst its citizens. Likewise, one is able to integrate cross-industries symbiosis by integrating education, farming, renewable energies, water, and sanitation treatments. Also, large mining projects usually require residential mega projects integration or collaboration in order to create large residential settlements for the workers.

South Africa’s ability to scale up farming is tremendous due to the huge amount of land available, large unemployed population, and importance of food security. Therefore, while Mega Cities create new settlements, food security can be expanded exponentially and reach a million people within 5 years! Education, training, and skills transfer specific to the end user is the key to the success of the 1 Million Job endeavor.
